Went for the ALW Success for Life programme today... didn't really want to go, but then my father signed me on anyway... only person I knew there was Matthew... well the trainers talked about how the mind works.. how the school system most stimulates the left brain, concerning with facts, numbers, events... right with creativity etc... then went on to talk about the conscious and sub-conscious mind... about links, dandrons, exon.. alittle experiment for all those reading this right now.. grab the first item on your desk, name it what it is not.. like say hat when you hold a pen... try it... at first its very uncomfortable.. cause when young you are taught a pen is a pen, the left brain deals with all these rules... think I revealed enough about the course.. later ALW sue me...
gave us a learning style test... got 1 for Audio.. means I don't learn well when I'm listening.. haha.. More of Visual and Kinesethic.. Must do and see!! ended at 5.30pm... kinda long.. hope this course is worth it though... already doing quite well for my studies.. already got my own style of studying.. which deviates alot from what normal people do.. most people would take a textbook, put it on their desk and stare at it for hours.. I don't.. Most of the time I travel alone.. walking home, going to somewhere to buy something.. so during the traveling time, I look around and see how I can connect it with me studies.. like I see flowers, Bio Chapt 20 comes into my mind.. Reproduction in Plants... can mostly apply to my sciences.. maybe only history I'll read from the book... the facts etc.. Mr Yeo already tells me I need more background knowledge, the skills I already have... Maths, everday there's always maths homework.. its rare that he doesn't give.. so that I'm ok... Chinese me weakest.. cause I don't use it much.. other than with my grandparent.. think blogging in Chinese would certainly help..

Went to town area after me tuition today.. went with me family.. go there eat lunch.. walked around.. saw this video-cam.. Panasonic's NV-250.. 3-CCD.. like those used for broadcast... thinking of getting a video-cam.. after seeing how cool videos are in my digicam.. although the quality isn't there.. that or a hybrid device.. the Casio EX-P505.. like the design.. looks alot like a digital SLR.. but many times smaller.. slightly bigger than a mini-CDR I would think.. maybe getting that for me birthday coming up next month... 3 days after SYF to be exact.. so for those who know when's our SYF, you'll know when's my birthday.. if not, keep tuned..
then went to compass point.. brother needed to cut his hair.. after that went to yoshinoya to eat.. know the
down-escalator that leads to Yoshinoya? Saw this lady trying to climb
up it.. trying to take a shortcut to the bus interchange I suppose... haha.. was struggling at the top part.. she's like slightly faster than the downward steps.. so took some time.. haha.. good excercise eh?

Week 1 of term 2 just ended.. Public holiday today, so got to sleep late... spent most of the day at home... then went to Compass Point with me brother.. wanted to buy a Xbox game... took 159 there, bought Fifa Street.. me brother genre: soccer, mine: racing..
well, Fifa Street quite fun.. stylish I should say.. can do all those tricks with the ball, volly, bicycle kick, handstand kick etc.. there's also this feature called the "gamebreaker".. fill this meter up with your tricks and once its full, you can unlease a powerful drive... its either the ball hits someone and injures him, or its a 100% goal.. cool... anyway I find the game not really realistic, the players won't seem to get injured... just roll on the floor a few times then OK already.. but who cares.. its a cool game anyway..
also bought a black ink cartridge for me printer and some mini-CDRs... decided to ride the punggol LRT for fun.. went to punggol plaza.. just walked around..

Watched Robots on Sat... not bad.. I like Ice Age more though.. lotsa parodies in the movie.. like in the beginning.. they literally make babies.. "Some assembly required".. And a bot holding up a sign saying "Got Screwed" he means it literally.. A large screw through his head... love their transportation system... sit in this metal sphere cage thingy, then can flung around, like pinball.. only wilder.. lotsa imaginative stuff shown in this movie.. but the story line kinda thin.. not much story to it.. more eye-candy.. all the bells and whistles, cogs and gears.. ha
Sunday, nothing much.. tuition in the morning, then stayed the rest of the afternoon at home. tried to finish up the holiday homeworks.. manage to finish both maths paper 1s.. went to anchorpoint in the evening... ate dinner there.. went to IKEA, walked about.. bought a alarm clock... seem to wake up late this 1st term... almost 8 then wake up.. then have about 10 mins to prepare, eat breakfast etc... its those wind up clocks... those digital clocks the alarm not annoying enough... also no tic toc tic toc sound for me to fall asleep too...
First day of term 2. the alarm works.. woke up at 7.. but still very sleepy... think I fell asleep again with the clock in my arms... woke up again at 7.30.. eat my breakfast, bath, went to school... brought the 56 rue Lepic reeds to school.. let the others try.. change of time tables... have triple science on Monday as usual.. first 2 periods maths and a maths.. 2 hours of Mr Low... then physics.. recess still the same time as the rest of the school.. then bio prac, social studies, chem pract, history... so to sum Monday up, double maths, double humanities, triple science.. nice..
now don't need to stay back for lit.. so whole class have the "previlage" of staying to 4.30... lit instead will be on wed.. seeing Mrs Pereira for 3 hours after recess... the rest nothing much to talk about... had band practice after school... saw the sec 1s for a short while only.. desmond teaching they all.. had to rush back to take my clarinet.. Mr Sukit taking us... his pronounciation of quaver very funny.. "kuey-wer" but he can teach.. taught us some stuff the Mr Leng left out.. the slur up etc.. at least he doesn't call us "puny brains"... let desmond, joseph, clement, jun min (jimmy) try the reeds.. think they sound much better with the 56 reeds... a richer sound.. good reed + average mouthpiece = nice sound.. good reed + good mouthpiece = nicer sound.. still waiting for the new mouthpieces Mr Leng said he'll buy...

went back to school on Tues and Wed... lessons in the morning.. afternoon, did nothing much...
Thurs went to Chong Boon... we were suppose to go there today, the whole band I mean... cause the teachers not free so did not go... we went there ourselves... mostly is the small instrument people.. flute, clarinet, trumpet, french horn the most... go there see the other bands.. Mr Leonard Tan's bands were there.. SJC and CHIJ Toa Payoh... noticed that many bands playing American Riversongs.. luckily we are the 6th band... so its either we play very well, make their version seem inferior or the other way round... Whitley could have played better.. they were here during the first exchange at chong boon... think its because their 1st Trumpet people not here... then all seem kinda lost...
went for lunch, then joined their band practice.. practiced Singapore Rhapsody... then sight read their to challenge the skies and heavens above... not that hard actually... only the off-beat rhythms abit tricky.. took some pics.. namely Gavilan and Yizhen... haha.. whole day at Chong Boon.. got to know some of the CB people.. went home dead tired...
Went to Accent Music today... Vandoren updated its site, so now Singapore's listed in the International Distributors list... wanted to buy the 56 rue Lepic reeds... try it out.. took the MRT all the way to Bukit Batok.. not really familar with that area, so just followed my instincts.. looked at the map at the station, found the bus interchange, took bus 61... didn't really know which stop to alight.. luckily their website got a pic of the building... so roughly knew when to alight.. was 3+ by then.. the shop kinda nice.. has just about everything... asked the lady whether they had the 56 reeds... had a box of 3.5 left.. just nice.. use 3.5 most of the times.. $45 for the box.. compared to $28 for traditional cut... the packaging nice.. more style.. went to try the new reeds out... first thing I noticed was its smell.. haha.. smells "fresh".. the cutting also different, similar to Zonda's.. a very slight V-shape.. the butt end of the reed also thicker.. also a gentler slope of the reed, different filing.. playing wise, its got a richer sound.. sound also very stable.. from pianissimo to fortissimo not much of a problem... a reed isn't just a piece of wood.. its to the clarinet as a voice box is to a singer..

Had band camp for the past 4 days, from Friday to Monday..
Friday:
School as usual for the first half of the day.. Some brought their stuff to school, coz they didn't want to go back to take.. I live so near, go back and take not a problem.. The last school day of term 1 ended at 12.30pm.. after our assembly.. had band practice till about 6.. then had a break for people to take their stuffs.. reported back by 8pm... then had more band practice.. think me make lotsa improvements during the day long practice.. bathing and dinner should have been done during the 2 hour break.. had a short movie screening, then it was sleeping time... the ex-co slept at the gallery area there.. the NPCC people were there too..
Saturday:Supposed to go for Sports Day today... but had the SAFRA Scrabble competition at the same time.. so while the band went to the stadium, me and gerald went to toa payoh.. wouldn't say it was a grueling competition.. "C" Division anyway, for all those not ranked in the SA... some first time playing.. first round was according to alphabetical order.. so played against a gal named Jean.. Jason and Jan also playing at the same table as me... too bad Northland Sec wasn't participating.. or else it would be a rematch with Jill... waited a long time for them to start.. the room so small, yet so many people inside.. close to 200..
Ended by 5+... played with 2 gals, 2 guys... Jean, Dave Yuen, Yiying and Joel Koh from my school.. won the gals, lost to the guys... always been like this in every competition I participate in... so during team events, if we're playing against mixed school, then I would choose to play against a gal... then I would always put a Bingo every match.. put Lenders, Roasted, Declare and Dieters for the 4 games respectively.. I don't actually fish for the bingos.. they just come to me.. the match with Dave crazy one.. the first turn he put a Bingo, Damager then my next turn I put Roasted... was neck to neck until the ending part of the game.. the OX, XI with X on the triple letter square was where he began to pull away from me.. the spread wasn't too bad.. 77 points behind.. was waiting for a i for Quails.. Q on the triple letter and S on the double word.. easily 60+ points and thats not even a bingo word... but couldn't get that I.. anyway, I met some new friends during the competition..
Missed first half of band camp for that competition... by the time we got back to school was already 6+.. whole of sat no band practice.. games and activities.. had them to prepare for talent-time.. but had to postpone to sun cause the teachers weren't all here...
Sunday:Telematch today... prepared the telematch props.. the balloons, strings etc.. Had footdrill in the morning first... Me and Wen Shao took the upper sec squad.. Most of the parts me taking.. lunch then telematch... fun in the sun... haha, was rather hot.. at least they had water from bursting the water balloons to cool them off... bathed then had band practice... not much practices during this camp... mostly is bond-building activites... talent time was the most memorable event in the camp for me... could see that the groups put in alot of effort in the skits.. could see the teamwork in the groups.. promotion ceremony after that... sec 2-4 were in their uniforms.. marched to the library there... almost every one was promoted... with the sad case of me.. the teachers say only can have one staff... then I already 1st, then cannot promote... still don't understand their logic.. even within the same rank, there's an order right? like Band Major bigger than Drum Major bigger than Deputy Band Major... but no-matter what... still would push hard for that gold medal... thats my goal..
Monday:last day of camp... broke camp at 11.30am... had a meeting with the teachers till 12.30pm.. then had to rush back to change... had to go to NTU for the Fuel Cells Prize Presentation thing... met Lian Jie, then took a cab there.. during the 30+min cab ride there.. we both were like falling asleep.. reached there exactly at 2pm.. registered and went to the auditorium... 3rd prize was River Valley.. 2nd was Serangoon.. was nervous by then... I got a feeling we could win with our instructional VCD.. then 1st was Nan Chaui.. the ones we worked with during the assembling process... still dunno their names... then they showed a movie clip... our VCD... ok.. at least our efforts were recognized... but still don't have that framed up fuel cell we made.. the Dr Fannon even said that if there was a 4th prize, we would get it... argh!!!! the VCD was mostly me, the packaging was mostly LJ... should have gotten that acrylic box... but our teacher absent on that day.. so could make the box.. anyway we did very last min work... 1 week before the submission date.. then lian jie got a camp before the date, so I had to go all the way down to NTU to submit the project... there goes our patent and world-wide production of our kit... very frustrated over these 2 days... went back immediately slept.. was dozing off in the train already..

SYF rehearsal yesterday.. Went to Singapore Conference Hall.. Chong Boon and Commonwealth were there too.. took turns to play our piece, then record it down.. see how we really sound.. didn't really do well during the first try.. all nervous I guess.. then had some practice time in the Hall.. we were last, but had an hour of practice.. so recorded it again.. much better, but there's still room for improvement..
Sectionals today as usual.. had them focus on the 129 section.. then the ex-co went to buy some stuff for the camp on fri.. bought stuff for the games etc.. then went Paya Lebah to see the design for the band shirt.. not that bad.. blue polo tee.. made some changes though.. removed the red quavers at the bottom.. not matching.. the vendor coming on Fri...

Went to IMM today with Clement and Jun Min... Wanted to buy reeds... Came to me house first, put their bags down.. Reached Jurong East at about 2.. the pasar malam we saw last week was still there... bought something to eat.. haven't taken lunch yet.. decided to walk to IMM, not that far actually.. used to walking further distances anyway.. went to the band world, came here last week, at about 6.30 then the store closes at 6... so decided to come again, today.. the sign said open, but the door still locked.. figured they had gone for lunch.. so we went to eat first.. tried again.. Clement suggested to ask the information counter.. on the way to the counter, met Desmond.. at first not quite sure it was him cause he not wearing his specs.. look less nerdy.. asked the lady at the counter, Desmond also here to buy reeds.. came alone.. even I won't come alone for such a far place.. so the 4 of us went back there..
4 of us got to know a new friend today.. Jerry Hutapea, plays the baritone sax in
Thomson Swing Band.. he also came to the band world to find its not open... need to call them before hand or something.. in his fifties I think.. comes from malaysia.. invited us for a drink at the kopitiam.. chatted with us.. told us why he played Jazz, about his band.. they performing at the Esplanade this Fri, at the outdoor theatre.. told him we also performed there before.. "you guys beat me to it eh.." joked alot with us.. like we were his old friends or something.. told us his philosophies in life.. also like what our principal said, about focusing on the present.. "took me 54 years to learn that..." also told us how to condition a reed, since we are all reed instrument players.. mostly me talking to him.. then Desmond, Clement and Jun Min sit there and listen.. they talked alittle.. was really able to relate to him.. was sorta like a mentor to us during the 30+ mins we talked.. shared alot of his experiences with us.. really gained my respect.. first time in Singapore I ever had a conversation with an absolute stranger... maybe because we're all musicians.. too bad we have band camp on Fri.. otherwise, I'll go see his performance..
Took the train back to Hougang.. Benjamin was waiting for us there... From 3 at the beginning, to 5... so the 5 of us went back to me house.. had alittle practice there.. all went back by 7....

Half day of school today.. Mr Simen came in to our class, talked about the O levels... showed us the average L1R5 of the various classes... 4E1 last year got 13.5... the year before, 12. something.. so he set a target for us, 10.. my target, at least 6 A1s.. talked and talked, motivate us.. took up half of the period.. so 30mins of A Maths, 1 hour of Bio, and 30 mins of Chem.. 11.30am end school.. had me section stay back... had sectionals with them.. Saiful and the "soundproofing committee" did the blankets and quilts.. Eg, sew them on the bamboo poles, hang around the band room.. band room kinda small, then the sound will echo off the hard walls.. so inturn, can't play so loud.. the blankets and quilts prevent sound from bouncing off the walls.. so not so noisy..
worked on American Riversongs, used Mr Leng's stick technique.. Getting more accuracy from them.. but still the sound quality isn't exactly there.. the overall sound that is.. individually, most of them can play a nice sound.. the upper sec people mostly can.. maybe Raymond and Joseph need to change.. probably see them one of these days, teach them the correct sound.. don't have much time.. went to eat lunch at about 1pm.. came back about 1.45.. continued practicing.. had another break at 4+.. went to see how they all are doing in the band room... pleasantly surprised.. had most of the quilts up.. even decorated the quilts with our band logo.. anyway not using anymore, keep in the cupboard for so long.. good job.. so about 6 hours in the band room, they finished the job.. even arranged the stands and files nicely.. and this is our own time.. offically no band practice today.. reached home at about 7.30pm..
