today's Joel's Birthday... then during physics lesson edison gave him a present.. goreng pisang.. fried bananas.. haha.. they keep saying he's an ape.. also, timothy actually sat down and had a proper meal today.. all the while he's eating upright.. eating vert.. haha.. suddenly the class table no space.. had to eat me chicken rice standing up.. eventually after eating half of the plate of rice, timothy got up and back to eating his usual way...
had english oral today as well.. was index number 2 so was one of the first.. the passage about a girl and his grandfather talking about the highway.. think we did it before.. the picture also seemed familar.. Mrs Pereira expected me to do better.. could have developed the points further.. well.. English papers tomorrow.. held in the hall.. a new experience for everyone I suppose.. for the past 9 years had had exams in the classroom...

Bio pract yesterday.. given a grape, then asked how is it dispersed.. by animals of course.. so juicy... as soon as the exam finished, ate it haha... good thing about bio pract is that your specimens can be eaten.. also given an onion.. had to draw a labelled diagram of it.. didn't study much for bio pract though.. just read through the practical book during the waiting period...
then normal school day today.. had NAPFA during the PE period.. did pull-ups followed by standing broad jump... 8 and 137cm for A respectively.. pull-ups did 8 and standing broad jump did 238cm.. haha just nice A.. don't see the point in doing more.. maybe the figure looks nicer in your report card thats all..
then heard somebody playing the clarinet after lit ended..(sensitive ears?) found it was Joel.. was playing his
A clarinet at the stair landing near the labs.. hardly anyone uses that stairs.. he let me try the A clarinet, its alittle longer than the Bb.. sounds
almost the same.. pitched just a semi-tone lower.. played mozart's clarinet concerto.. was originally written for A clarinet, tried it out on my Bb before, but sounded different from the recording.. although the instrument itself was rather old.. but produced a very nice sound... partly due to the mouthpiece too.. was using a M15.. could produce a singing tone.. music really brings out the feelings of the player.. wonder why Joel was there alone at the first place...

Almost forgot that there's physics practical today.. was packing my bag when I went to check my timetable.. the exam timetabel was out front.. then noticed there's physics practical exam today.. slept at 8 yesterday.. worn out from yesterdays scrabble finals.. then only woke up at 7.. after eating breakfast, it was already 7.20.. reporting time was 7.15.. only then did I realize.. hurriedly packed my pack and rushed to school.. got to school at about 7.30.. sweatly and stuff.. luckily the AVA resource room is air conditioned... cool down for the next 30 mins before the practical starts... the class in 2 labs as usual.. I was in Einstein lab.. didn't study at all for the pract.. the chem one at least I got flip through my file..
2 experiments.. one dealing with electricity, need to plot voltage over current with different resistors in the curcuit.. and I didn't bring my calculator.. !! had to borrow from Dave... numbers turned out nice whole numbers... switched over to the refraction experiment at 8.50. aligned the pins etc.. did everything correctly ( I hope..), worried that my values not correct...
then also got the results for the chem pract back today.. Sly very Sly.. got 1 more mark higher than me.. I got 36/40 he got 37/40.. should have remembered to write the word
purple when recording what happens to potassium permanganate...I'll try to get full marks for the "O"s practical... most of me classmates got between the 20-30 range

Scrabble finals today... went to school at 7...dunno who say come to school at 7, then herself haven't come.. so we boarded the bus first, waited for our teacher, Mrs Khoo... headed for suntec.. on the way there, I was reading the book I bought some time ago.. Ultimate guide to winning scrabble... tried to commit some of the 3 letter words to memory and some high scoring words.. this is the 3rd time the scrabble final held at Suntec.. the 1st time was at Woodlands Regional Library... Met Jill before the game.. Wearing this nerdy plastic specs... her sis was there too.. checked the pairings.. Montfort and Northland.. her team facing Addy's team.. too bad not mine.. first 3 rounds quite good.. won all 3. vs St Margaret's, Bedok South and Catholic High.. and guess what.. finally won a guy.. its like a curse to me.. when I play with guys, always get bad tiles.. either not a vowel in sight: MKLGNYS or not a constantant in sight :IIIAAAO... and put 2 bingos per game too.. up from my usual one per game.. then a lunch break at 12.. kinda hungry from 3 hours of scrabble..
Addy keep talking about a gal who kept pinching him.. think Addy met Jill already.. then he's so scared.. kept looking around for her.. then ran at first sight of her.. haha.. such a big guy like Addison running away.. haha.. only after the last round did he get within a metre from her.. from running away to talking... Addy made a new friend today..

Jill and Addy
4th round we faced Hwa Chong... we lost 4-1.. only kelvin won... eventually they got first... last round facing Catholic High again... faced Alvin Lim... me primary schoolmate... could barely recognized him.. what luck... had 2 8-letter bingo in a row too.. he put
noob then bingoed with
windiest with the N from noob... then again with
ferments, attached to the T from the previous one.. leading by 100+ and it was only like the 4th move.. haha.. won by 183 spread.. not my highest spread, but my highest against a guy.. hah
had to listen to the essay-writing winners while they tabulate our scores.. the 1st prize winner was this RI guy... came up to read... suppose to use all the words they give you to make an essay.. "I am a
NERD! " then everyone started clapping.. haha.. the competition area was just outside carrefour, so I suppose the shoppers inside heard that too? by then lotsa people were looking.. "I am a nerd. But I am not gay. Don't I have feelings for love..." can't remember what he said after that.. but remembered everyone laughing.. oh yea his last phrase.. "If I am not a nerd. What am I?" then the audience replied "
Gay!" think the judges chose his piece cause its the most entertaining? haha.. he won the 1st prize by the way.. laughing my head off.. if that was me, I would be embrassed.. but he took it rather well.. but it something different from the previous years.. Dave won last year i think.. but got merit this year..
the resutls came.. reading from the 10th position up... we got 5th, but the trophy still put merit.. they should put 5th or something like that, if not, like the 10th and 5th place the same.. only the top 3 got 3rd, 2nd and 1st on their trophies.. the other 2 teams didn't win.. we could get higher if somebody didn't lose so much... ie, calvin looi... still want to suan me for losing a match in the qualifying rounds.. in the end, he lost 4 out of 5... if he won 2 more matches, maybe we could be the top 3... argh..

Montfort and Bedok South teams...

Montfort, Bedok South, and Marsling teams..

Chemistry mid-year practical exam today.. had to wake up at 6.. reach school by 7.15am.. haven't woken up so early for school since last year? somehow, it feels normal going to school at 7.. very little people in school, don't know why they come so early for.. only till I stepped into the AV resource room did it get noisy.. "how to test for ammonia ar?" and other last minute questions about practical... just looked through my chem file... ok, I know this, yar, I know that.. then spend the rest of the time being myself... going through the process in my head while me other classmates are busy talking away.. proceeded to the chem labs on the 2nd floor..
class spilt into 2 groups, 1 in
Curie Lab, the other in
Dalton Lab.. I was in Curie.. all the apparatus was already there.. checked the stuffs, then started the exam at 8 sharp.. did titration first.. stupid pipette filler not working properly.. can suck yes, but the empty button something wrong... keep pressing but the solution won't come down.. asked for another one.. titration was rather good.. got 2 exact readings: 23.2.. the QA part not that good.. didn't read the question.. said use 3cm3 of the dissolved solid for the test, then used all.. lucky had some of the solid left, redo... then couldn't find out what the gases were.. add magnesium powder to the solution, effervercence was seen... tried using the lighted splint, coundn't get the "pop" sound... wrote down hydrogen anyway.. the rest ok...
then had to be quarantined in the theatrette... not to let the 2nd shift people know the questions.. oh yea, and it was
Jia Qing's birthday... got "special" treatment during the 30 min quarantine period.. ended up with his shirt undone and wet.. you can guess what happened... luckily my classmates don't know it was mine a week ago... haha
lessons as normal after that..

Went to Causeway Point on Sunday... took the mrt there.. just me mum, me brother and me... father went to "shao mu"... had lunch at Jack's Place.. yum.. went to Timezone on the 5th level.. changed alot.. more family-oriented now.. has the trivia thing, somesort like those on the brainiest kid show.. 5 questions.. some very simple.. like what is Singapore's Airport called? Suntec City Airport, Serangoon Airport or Changni Airport.. ahh still got one person answer wrong.. ! anyhow whack one I think.. then if you answer all 5 correctly, got Jackpot prize.. guess what, got 290 tix.. then added to the ones I had before, 450.. just nice can redeem the Coca-cola mug thing.. me father met up with us later on, then went to watch
The Pacifier.. somehow, the role played by Vin Disel somewhat like my father when me and me brother were born? cause he's in the air force.. the movie quite nice.. like the part when the small gal asked: "why are your boobs so big?" "will mine be as big as yours?" Vin being rather fit yah? haha..
Then Monday had NAPFA test, the 5 stations.. sit and reach the poorest amongst the 5.. think I'll go for the retest just for sit and reach?? then the Chong Boon people came to our band today.. then Amanda came to find me.. gave me a present, like infront of the sec 4 cohort? then me classmates keep going Eh~ Eh~... A giant milk bottle with paper stars inside.. from amanda, yizhen, shuyin, thomas.. known them thru MSN long time before Mr Leng came about.. the irony of life..
today, founder's day full-dress rehearsal.. could leave class at 1.30.. sight-read-transpose Spartans of tomorrow into Eb? had only like 1 practice with the songs before the rehearsal.. went quite well.. the NCC people were intime with the beat.. don't know if they finally know how to count or is their NCO drill it into them one... One of the NCC people from me class, Gerald fainted.. couldn't see anything, just saw him sitting on the side after it happened.. Leng was there.. not conducting, just came to see us.. brought me xaphoon to school.. dunno let how many people try.. all can't play...even Timothy can't.. I couldn't for the first time.. lips kinda pain now.. like when I first played the clarinet in sec 1.. lips not use to it I guess..

bought a
Xaphoon today.. went to Yamaha Music Plaza.. heard about it from a web forum... didn't dare try it there.. too many people.. haha.. $130.. parents haven't bought me a birthday present, so this it...
tried it out in the car-ride home.. the embrosure not a problem.. think any experienced clarinettist or saxophone player should be able to play it with ease... althought it's small in size (about 30cm, your recorder size), it's big on sound.. sounds almost like a saxophone, with hints of a clarinet.. the fingerings different though.. some very weird.. reached home at about 7..
was getting the hang of it.. by 9 was playing some songs... Yesterday, My Heart Will Go On, Pink Panther.. from memory, got the first note of the song, then the rest just naturally flowed out.. ahah.. don't have perfect pitch though, just not tone deaf.. charmed by the sound of the xaphoon.. (pronounced za-foon by the way...)
Pink Panther on the Xaphoon.. believe thats not played on a saxophone?

Well, SYF's over... woke up at 5 in the morning.. we practiced for awhile before heading to SCH at about 7.45am.. whole band went to the back of the building, where the carpark is... wasn't many cars there at all.. warmed up there.. then waited.. our performance time was scheduled at 9.45.. so 9.15 already need to go in.. went in to the tuning room.. didn't exactly tune.. were allowed exactly 10 mins to do whatever we want.. so practice parts of the 2 songs for one last time.. didn't went in immediately after coming out of the tuning room.. got 2 bands infront of us.. Clementi Town and Broadrick.. Sembawang came sometime after.. saw Raidah there.. wished me good luck..
10 mins and its over.. had to miss a bar to adjust my thumbrest.. stupid thumbrest.. played quite well.. its either gold or silver, some of alumi were there too.. watched the other schools play.. one school I noticed was Fajar Sec.. their uniform like scottish.. checkered patterns.. the percussionist were like jumping around.. literally.. very funny.. one feet first then the other.. copy CS..
went for lunch after that.. whole band walked around CBD area.. in full uniform some more.. weird.. good advertising though.. when crossing the roads like gang fight.. one side one large group of 50 something band members then the other side 50 something bussiness people.. then whole band ate Burger King.. teachers treat $4 each.. at least we put our instruments back at SCH.. dunno why the teachers didn't cater food.. then walked back to SCH.. only upon reaching did we find out that we were not allowed back in.. the offical said that we were in the AM session, so could only attend the AM part.. results would only be announce at 7.. so spent the next 4 hours talking.. nothing much to do..
By 7, alot of people already crowding around the entrance to the hall.. was told to go to the other side of the hall.. was told that the hall is full, then we could not go in.. only Kenneth and Wilson managed to go in.. got the band to sit and listen to the results from a speaker.. wasn't feeling nervous when we performed in the morning, but now I was... the announcer gave a long speech, thanking the judges, thanking the organiser.. the whole hall went "OH.." can even hear from outside where we were.. then came the results.. Band Number 1. Christ Church Secondary School - Bronze.. Band Number 6. Montfort Secondary School... was begging so hard in my mind for a gold.. everyone was silent.. the tension was so thick you could cut with a knife.. that 2 or 3 second pause felt excruciating long..
Silver.. Some of us clapped, the rest just shocked into silence.. Mr Leng wasn't there.. wonder why.. We wanted a gold so much that we couldn't settle for second best.. no one actually cried.. only Saiful, who played a trumpet solo in american riversongs shed some tears.. thats the most.. we only got our choice piece on 28th Jan.. alittle more than 2 months before SYF.. I admit that there are some mistakes that haven't been fixed.. but there's simply not enough time.. stayed to hear the rest of the result of the other schools... what shocked me the most was not our results but the results of another school.. Orchid Park.. From COP to Gold with Honours.. Pro.. they've got my respect..
we left Singapore Conference Hall on a sombre note.. everyone wasn't talking much on the bus.. then in the middle of the journey, burst into a rather sad rendition of American Riversongs.. only then did we find out that we were only 2 marks away from a gold.. 78. went back to school.. kept instruments.. was already going to 9.. then something amazing happened.. our storeroom light finally stayed on.. haven't seen it on for.. never? some electrical problem.. on for a few secs then off..
I think this SYF made us more willed than ever to achieve a gold in 2007.. although it'll be the current sec 2s that will lead the band then.. I hope this SYF would be the turning point and live up to our name.. Montfort
Military Band

had the last band practice before SYF today... can't believe time passes so quickly.. still can remember 2003's Persis... its only been 4 months since we first look at our American Riversongs... whereas others have been practicing their choice piece a year... really believe that a gold is within our reach, its whether we want it or not...recorded down our 2 songs.. sounded rather nice, despite my cam is not a dedicated recorder.. should use those furry furry mics.. can't really hear the dynamics in the recording though...
picture taking after that.. brought my cam... stand in the hot sun for an hour, even my
silver-coloured camera was getting hot.. silver is a bad absorber of heat?? then OYL get raped, haha.. after taking our Clarinet Section pic, then he wanted to change, so we "helped"... got it down on video.. woo! strip him topless only lar.. but the video very funny... anyway, OYL always act ah gua one.. Mr Leng also says so.. talked about how we should sit, then OYL sat in the convent girls style.. legs together, and at the side.. then Mr Leng went "
OH!".. shocked, disgusted kind of OH.. took pics until 1.30..
then went to Accent Music with Max... wanted to buy the 56 reeds... new 56 reeds sound nicer.. just season for a short period can already... use too long, it becomes dirty, not its new yellowish colour... becomes soft, and doesn't give you that rich, sonorous sound.. the shop closes at 3.30.. we reached there about 3.25.. just nice..also bought a ligature.. don't know why he didn't buy a mouthpiece and ligature when he bought his clarinet.. bought the BG super revelation ligauture.. gold-plated..
Monday must reach school at 6am.. Montfort Military Band- 1st Day, 6th Band, 11th April 2005, 0945
2 more days.

2 important days next week... Monday and Thursday... this year SYF period falls on my birthday.. why isn't it not on the
14th?? my pre-birthday wish is for Montfort Military Band to achieve a
Gold medal this Monday...
bought a book on scrabble on sun.. $15.. went to kinokuniya at bugis junction.. wasn't really looking for it.. just happened to see it.. hope to improve me skills... also bought this plant in a can thing.. try for fun.. still nothing yet..
had morning practice this week.. to prepare for
SYF.. most bands would sound bad during the morning.. cause your not awake, don't watch the conductor, lethargic.. suprisingly, we sound quite good in the morning.. even Mr Leng commented that.. started at 7.. played for an hour or so, then its school time.. afternoon another practice.. Mon, Tues and one tomorrow... Sat another practice.. then Sunday break.. Monday, if we can get our principals approval, then we can stay for the results.. even if we don't more than half the school day is gone anyhow... I strongly believe that we can get the gold medal.. its all in the mind.. no athele would have this mind-set "I must get 2nd, I must get 2nd" to some extent I agree with Mr Simen's saying "If you believe it, you'll see it." believe in yourself..

Talk about yesterday first... 1st April... around 10.30 the lower sec recess ending.. in my school there's always this signature tune for morning assembly and same tune for signify recess has end.. think the AV guys playing pranks or what.. the tune was very much sharper, higher pitched.. then suddenly go low.. like when your tape recorder no batt... very out of tune.. probably some guy fidling with the pitch control nob or something... very funny...
Then today had the 4th Inter-school Scrabble competition... was there for the first 3 too.. think it was the 2nd where I met Jill... also played with Jade, her sis.. individual competition mostly by alphabetical order.. so I mostly play with Js.. played with Jean the last competition... qualifying round.. suppose to be the auto-qualifier since we got 3rd for last year.. but sent in Gerald's team for the auto-qualifier place.. more teams can qualify that way..
5 players per team, 3 rounds.. held at Westwood Sec.. waited quite along time to get to the hall.. Jill was there too... could remember some faces there... mostly all the same people.. with some new teams... First round was against Beatty Sec.. 5-0 +1149 spread... means the total score of our team minus the opponent team's score = 1149.. first time they playing scrabble.. 2nd round was against Yuying.. 5-0.. 3rd round was against RI.. although they are the "top" school, they aren't really good in scrabble.. 4-1.. I lost by a slim margin.. damn it.. always seem to lose against guys.. its like a curse... will draw bad tile.. then even if I have a bingo, can't seem to put it down.. anyway, our total spread for the 15 games was 3800+.. bound to qualify for the grand-finals at suntec.. luckily we did not win all 15.. or else would face the top names in scrabble (besides us) in the first round.. caught up with Jill after the game ended.. Northland also did quite well.. maybe we'll meet in the finals..
