well, its 13 days to SYF.. have practice everyday till almost 8, then stayed back to do my tutorials after that knowing I won't do them if I went home.. so haven't had the time to blog much these days..
regarding academic life, got back the comments for PW on tues, our group's file was supposedly sent to MOE for dunno what, so didn't get that back.. Wed our Econs teacher didn't come so had an extra 1.5 hour break.. well, almost the whole class went to mac to have breakfast during that 2 hour break we had.. tried the new bagel, didn't know the egg had onion inside..
Wed was the Ex-Co interviews for Photog.. in quite a dilema here, even after narrowing down, we still have 2 strong contenders for my post as Chief Instructor.. whereas the rest of the posts are more or less set.. the standard of the pics we produce largely relies on how well the Chief Instructor can teach the members, so its an important decision.. seems like exactly one year back again, but this time we're the ones giving the interview.. the final rituals before we step down..
Friday was a half-day due to the 30th Anniversary the next day.. bumped into Mr Lau about 1 week back when he asked me if I was going to cover the 30th Anniversary.. told him I was performing, he said it's such a waste if I'm not covering.. he's been quite supportive of me every since the reshuffling of teachers-in-charge, and prob Mr Neo before that, though he doesn't explicitly tells me..
the new cameras came in the afternoon, was still having full band, so he left it in the darkroom first.. well, our playing wise has improved after intensive sectionals.. Bar I of Sinfonia still doesn't sound like what I imagined it to be.. my sound has been better since I got the B44, but still don't find myself doing the "pouring out from the soul" kinda playing.. I want this part to be where the Alto Clar really shines since I'm the only one playing the lower melody with the rest of the clarinet section..
then went to watch a DVD which had a video recording of Sinfonia.. it was by Sienna Wind Orchestra, a jap band.. had some trouble getting it playing at first, but resolved it.. the way the conductor conducts is really emotion, and the musicians themselves just superb.. they didn't do a cameo on the alto clarinettist though, only knew there was one by looking closely at the full band shot..

Today we had a band exchange at HCI in the morning before the 30th Anniversary Celebrations.. and yes, their uniform colour is the exact same shade as the J1s.. went according to SYF appearance order, so we're 2nd to perform.. HCI played Symphonic Overture for their choice piece, one of my fav band pieces.. the opening was nice, woodwinds running notes were nice too.. but the brass intonation can be better..
we were up next.. their chairs were abit too low for my liking.. played Safari and Sinfonia, Safari had a very obvious mistake in the clapping part.. Sinfonia was ok, Mr Tan let us hear the recording of it when we got back to sch.. needs some more refinement..
VJC was there also, except for the Contra-Alto, they had the full expanded instrumentation for the clarinet section.. yea, the straight Contra-Bass is sick.. they played Spartacus, another one of my favs, for the rhythms especially.. then made a new friend today.. Ginny, who also plays the Alto Clar from VJC.. had a nice chat with her since she is the only other Alto Clarinettist there.. all the JCs there had an Eb clarinet, and they're all guys with the exception of us.. they're also playing Safari, so passed her my printed transposed score as she only used pencil markings to transpose the 3rd score.. gotta go print another copy for myself now..
got back to sch at around 1+ for our 30th Anniversary Celebrations.. had to settle some photog stuff since today's a huge event and I'm not covering.. they had some problems at the neoprint booth.. apparently the teacher didn't buy the adapter for the card sized prints.. luckily, I bought the adapter for the V-Day bazaar and its in the darkroom..
went up to the hall and waited for the arrival of the GOH.. had a brass fanfare to welcome the minister, then more waiting as they gave their speeches.. the choir were all decked out in their SYF attire, and we on the other on were just wearing the sch u.. quite contrasting if you ask me.. had to play soft as to not overpower the choir.. alot of the alumni members were present, the college anthem/school song would mean alot to them.. had a resounding round of applause after we played, quite statisfying feeling..

Me and Zhi Kai with our final product..
went down to eat, then met up with Zhi Kai.. took some self portraits of ourselves with the Virtual Tour touch screen panel which was launched today.. Mr Kooi came to congratulate us on a job well done, but still need to update some of the scenes since alot of construction been going on just for today.. opening new sites around the college..

first off..

What does it take to get people to tag around here??

I know ppl do read my blog going by the counter.. and yes, this blog may be very factual based, but its not some newspaper you go read and chuck it aside... or maybe I should do a sensationalised post here and shock ppl..

did something foolish on Thurs.. Mr Tan been coming everyday since the sec sch SYF's done.. haven't been playing up to his expectations, my sole reed's dying on me already and its definately not gonna last till SYF.. well it'll last if I take good care not to chip it or anything, but the sound produced ain't gonna be nice.. was abit fustrated with myself.. and the disparity between my music and photography widens.. the issue of talent vs hardwork..
went down to Accent after sch on Thursday.. blew the remaining of my hong bao money from my birthday on a mouthpiece, a ligature and a box of reeds..

bought the B44 mouthpiece and a box of 3.5 reeds.. of cos I could have just billed it to the college, but the Alto clar doesn't even belong to the sch in the first place and knowing how budget-minded the sch is, just don't wanna trouble them.. so there goes a stack of notes I've never see again.. yes, I know I may have just wasted a whole bunch of $$, seeing I probably won't be using it after SYF.. and buying 3 boxes of Eb clarinet reeds when we need more Bb reeds is good allocation of money..
got back to sch on 157/105.. tried out the new mouthpiece, soaked the new reeds in the the film canister which my class gave me as a birthday card along with a pouch.. the most unique "birthday card" I've ever recieved.. they wrote on a strip of film which you had to unfurl to read.. the mouthpiece sounds brighter than the one that came with the instrument, and new reeds are such a relief, need to season it more though..
Mr Tan came with lotsa new reeds for the woodwinds.. got another 2 boxes of 56 reeds and V12 reeds.. though I would have prefered him not to get all the same strength, 3.5 may be slightly too hard for some of the J1s.. got Tenor Sax reeds which Christopher has been asking for some time.. and as I expected he didn't get my reeds.. it doesn't matter anyway..

just leave me to walk this path alone.. emotions capped inside with no one to turn to.. screaming my lungs out, crying it out.. the inner strength subsides and the flame diminishes, everyday a challenge.. in this time of need, looking out for that guiding light, can't you see I need you? heck, just leave me to walk this path alone..

its already past midnight.. meaning its the 14th of April! well, as usual didn't recieve much birthday wishes.. Kok Wey was the first to wish me, follow by Jill next.. msged Annie to wish us happy birthdays, cos we share the same birthdate.. though not the same year, Annie's 2 years older than me (can't really tell right..)

*I'll continue this post later, got quite some stuff that I wanna blog about.. night..

starting off with Thursday.. a short day of lessons as per normal.. it was also the 4th day for the Sec Sch's SYF, Montfort was no. 97, the first band for the 2nd half of the afternoon session.. so had some time before their 4pm slot.. figured that this would be the only slot I'm free enough to get it before Sat so took 156 to Bukit Timah..
had a pleasant suprise as I boarded 156..

the whole interior of the bus was retrofitted with stylish white leather seats.. part of an advertisement campaign for Nokia.. quite cool.. changed to 157 to Accent.. bought 2 boxes of Vandoren 56 rue Lepic reeds as part of my birthday gift to the section.. (yes I know its ironic that I'm giving presents out for my birthday, instead of the other way round..) don't wanna reveal the exact cost, but lets just say 2 blue notes were used..
it rained during this whole time, and there wasn't any shelther to the building.. got abit soaked, luckily I brought an extra set of clothes.. took 174 to Orchard and 700 to SCH.. wasn't quite sure where to alight, so ended up walking back to SCH.. they had just arrived as I approached the entrance.. lotsa familar faces with some new ones.. went to see the clarinet section, they had just gotten new RCs.. very shiny, unlike some of NY's RCs.. hahaa..
caught up with my batch-mates there, namely Gerald, Sean, Joel, Desmond, Matthew and Thomas.. actually most of the alumni's that went to watch were from my section.. missed the times we spent together as a section.. it really the process rather than the results..
Wee Chong and Douglas were there also to support Maris Stella who were immediately after Montfort..

the band..
they played Sunrise and Flight of the Falcon.. hearing how both pieces turned out, it confirmed what I already had in mind.. then watched the other bands play, Maris was quite good.. they got Gold as I predicted.. Bedok North's rendition of Safari was fun to watch.. losta visual effects from the band on top of the sound effects written on the score.. too bad they don't do video recording for SYF.. hahaa..
when the results were announced, we were a Silver band no more.. and so continues the alternate Silver/Bronze trend.. at least my batch managed to buckle that trend.. just when would the glory days return again..?
well, with Sec Sch's SYF over, its time to focus on my own SYF.. as with Montfort, I'm part of the batch with all hopes for a Gold pinned on us again..
then went to the Grassroots Club to have dinner with my family.. Fri and Sat evening's I won't be free so having it on Thurs.. overslept on the train and ended up in Khatib but still made it on time for the dinner..
Friday the 13th again, started the day off on the wrong foot.. overslept, was wondering why it was so bright outside when I woke up.. but made it in time for the first period.. another long day, chem and phyiscs practs were enjoyable.. newtonian mechanics for phyiscs, which involved projecting a ball bearing.. and kinetics for chem, which involved thiosulphate and acid..
Mr Tan came to see us for sectionals, assign the parts for J1s.. need new reeds for my Alto Clar though, chipped 2 reeds already and surviving on my sole reed..

Saturday, 14th April.. as mentioned above, Kok Wey and Jill were the first to wish me on the stroke of midnight.. anyway, wanna thank all those that wished me Happy Birthday.. from band, Kok Wey, Annie, Hui Shan, Gloria, Wee Chong, Li Ying, Clement, Christopher.. from my class, Angie, Tricia, Wilson, Yuan Ting, Jun An.. my good friends Jill, Heng Tee, Alfred, Bernadette, Charmaine..also wanna thank Yia Chin, one of the photog J1s, and Yu Jing from YPSB.. two of whom I was quite suprised that they knew about my birthday and bothered to wish me even though they don't know me so well..

a big THANK YOU!

then it was Gloria's usual celebration of birthdays after practice.. quite glad to be able to share a birthday with Annie.. something that only has a probability of 1/365 of happening assuming its a Poisson distribution.. hahaa..
wrapped the 2 boxes nicely in a striped wrapping paper the night before and presented it to the section.. Huai Yu and Wei Jie were pushing it to each other on who should accept it.. gave it to Wei Jie to open it since he is afterall the SL..

anyway, some fun pics after band..

Chester pretending to be a Clarinet..
then went to J8 to eat together with Annie, Kok Wey, Alan, Wee Chong, Shao Ming and Yong De.. went to the food court upstairs to eat.. Wee Chong made me not pay for my meal since it was my birthday and treated me..
went to get a copy of Command and Conquer 3 as a present for myself.. been wanting to play it since I've heard about it.. quite a fan of the C&C series..

my fruitty cake..
wasn't much a celebration unlike last year.. it doesn't feel like a coming of age thing that I thought it would be when I was younger.. oh well..
anyway, been quite a disappointing few days in terms of results.. got back PW results.. got a D.. sometimes I don't understand why I don't perform well for the actual thing.. recieved lotsa postive comments leading up, but just fail to live up to expectations..

a continuation of the previous post.. more on Sunday..
Sunday was the main festival itself, the performance/adjudication.. forgot it was 9.30 so came at 9.. got our instruments then headed for the buses since the percussion instruments have been moved the day before.. oh yea, an interesting fact about the Alto Clar case.. its just the correct size for hugging.. my arms can comfortably wrap around the width, and the height is just nice for me to lie my head on.. hahaa.. didn't have much sleep the night before.. went to play pool at amk after the workshops.. caught some shut eye on the trip there..
our rehearsal slot was after St. Pats.. the sound there is different compared to the band room, acoustics much better.. watched the other bands rehearse before having lunch..

my Alto Clar..
had packet lunch at the same area where the lift is.. it was Wei Jie's birthday today, so we sang him a birthday song.. after lunch was the start of the performances.. we were the last band to perform since we're in the open cat, just for the comments.. abit of mistakes in the ending of Grandfather Clock Variations though..
then stayed on stage for the review clinic.. commented that we have a great sound, but dynamics wise can be better.. played though various portions of the piece to show how it can be better.. sat though the other band's review clinics.. then the closing ceremony at the Arts House.. as usual, lotsa ppl taking photos as we said our farewells.. come to a stage where I don't even bother taking photos for myself anymore..

then stayed back with Lucius to move the percussion instruments back.. more manual labour.. but at least we don't need to carry it onto the lorry.. they had helpers to do that.. Mr Neo gave us a lift back..

back-tracking this post cos been busy as usual.. Muse Festival was over the long weekend, Fri Sat and Sun.. well, we also participated in the 1st Muse Festival in 06, but only to have an exchange with the NZ Band and as a demo band for the workshop.. so this time had more participation..
came back on Good Friday to have a short practice first before attending the opening ceremony.. the J1s had their own practice first, came early and heard them play for awhile.. instrumentation wise, all the sections have a healthy no. of J1s, so not much trouble after our batch leaves.. practiced the 2 festival pieces Sinfonia and Grandfather Clock Variations.. then made our way to the Arts House for the opening ceremony..

NYJCSB at Muse Festival 2007..
met the other bands which were participating in the festival also.. 3 overseas bands, from Thailand, NZ and China.. had dinner provided for us, didn't eat much cos of the large crowd forming at the buffet table.. took quite alot of pics there, mostly of the very enthu NZ ppl there.. they would just join in the fun whenever theres a group shot.. Annie found a new found friend from China, she was following Annie along and holding on to her wherever she went.. er, then Li En was also draggin me around to help her take pics with the NZ guys.. there was a guy who look quite like Harry Potter, according to Li En..
there wasn't transport provided for the return trip, so we were dismissed from there.. so walked to City Hall to take the MRT..

forgot to turn on the flash, so the colours look quite weird.. then went to Raffles City with Clement and Chester to have ice-cream at Ben & Jerry's.. had the Strawberry Cheesecake while Chester had the Chocolate Chip and Cookie Dough which I recommended to him.. Clement sneaked in some ice-cream he bought elsewhere, but it wasn't reallly worth it compared to Ben & Jerry's..

we sat beside the fountain, then Chester came up with some analogies regarding sound.. like how the water flow arches and increases and decreases.. something like cresendo and decresendo..

Saturday we hosted the other bands from the Muse Festival for the workshops and masterclasses.. Mr Tan arranged to have an exchange with the Thai band in the morning, it wasn't part of the main organiser's schedule, so we were basically alone in planning it.. spent hours during the past week planning for it, scrutinising every detail.. food was one issue, at first he said we can go out and eat.. but even with a small group of ppl going to the coffee shop to eat, there's hardly enough space there.. imagine a group of 140 ppl going out to eat, a logistical nightmare.. decided on getting one of the food vendors in the canteen to cook for us.. Lucius and I were put on that task.. Lucius dealt with the money side of the issue, while I took care of the logistics..
first order of the day was to get ready for the Thai band's arrive, us two QMs were incharge of getting the hall ready.. got the J1s to set up the chairs, then the Thai band arrived at 9+.. had a short introduction, then it was sectionals..
Sectionals..
they also had an Alto Clarinettist, though I didn't really talk much to him.. shared some warm up techniques etc, played some technicals together.. then it was full band, played first followed by them.. got Zhi Kai to help us cover since I won't be free..
played Sinfonia, recorded it down with my S2 but the table tenis ppl were having their training in the hall together with us, so theres a constant pitter-patter noise in the background.. so much for the recordning.. anway one of the pieces they played was An Old Fashion Medly, which had a very nice clarinet solo..

the 2 Clarinet Sections..
was lunch after that.. Me and Lucius went down first to get the food ready.. carrying 140 packets of food back and forth is damn repetitive.. some of the other guys came down to help also.. lunch was Lasi Lemak, made sure everyone has their share first before the 2 of us started eating.. ate with Zhi Kai since they didn't save a space for me.. hiaz..
after lunch the rest of the Muse bands came, had workshops with the SSO tutors.. we had Ms Yoko who was Japanese.. thought some basic breathing techniques.. Wee Chong was abit aprehensive about him being touched.. hahaa..

had a much more pleasant 2 days compared with the previous 2.. Wednesday came went back to school as per normal.. tried to catch what I missed on Tues.. conducted the first lesson for the 2nd intakers, and I think I went alittle too fast.. but some are really keen..
then went back in time for full band pract, praticed Grandfather's Clock and Sinfonia.. the running notes with the basses at the end much together now.. then for Sinfonia I tried something that I had suggested for AE a year back.. closed my eyes and experienced the music.. felt this heart-wrenching pain that I've felt before while playing, but not as intense as when I just closed my eyes.. the feeling felt very similar to Persis, when the 03 batch described the music to us.. missed playing the Eb part for the climax of the slow adante movement, where the altissimo register of the Eb clarinet really shines.. just don't feel Li En gives much character to the Eb even though technicals wise she may be better, while I'm the opposite.. on the other hand, love playing the lower melody of the Alto and the occasional bass line..
then today feels like a friday, since its a public holiday tomorrow.. ended at 12.30 as usual, went to the band room as usual, took out my Bb to play as usual.. then Shirley informed me that one of the J1s was going to use my instrument.. although I've a new found love, I'm very much still a Bb player, even while before the change, I still am.. its like taking a part of me away again, this time its a larger cut..
went to take out the problematic instruments to check on them.. some minor problems like tenore cork loose.. Xue Qi's one had a pad that dropped out, but it played fine until I noticed the top trill key pad was missing.. Yong De asked the repairman come down to look at some of the instruments, took out the key for him to fix.. gave the keys some polish since I took it out.. then took out the left hand keys to give them a polish too since its quite tarnished.. ended up polishing the rest of the problematic clarinets since I was working on them.. and one side of my silver cloth is now very black..
only went off at 3.50 to get back home to get the rest of the photographs for submission for the Singapore School's Photography Competition 2007.. initially wanted to go home straight to get them, but the repairman was coming.. got the pack of photos that we already sorted out, did the labels for the various room for Sat.. then took a cab to rj.. the cab driver was very friendly, we had a little chat about photography along the way.. hahaa, told him I was going to submit some photos for a competition, he wished me all the best as I was leaving his cab.. well, the campus is freaking nice.. asked one of the students walking around for directions to the General Office, she was free so she walked me there.. showed her some of my works that I was submitting, she commented it was very nice, and wished me all the best too as we approached the GO.. then came the 3rd nice person I met that afternoon, the receptionist at the GO.. had a pleasant time dealing with her when submitting the photos.. I had lotsa work cut out for her since the photos were all nicely packed and accompanied by the entry forms in a clear plastic sheet..
these 3 people really made my day.. got back to sch for another com meeting for the Muse Festival.. Wee Chong and Tracy went to get dinner for us, but he sorta forgot my order.. haven't eaten lunch yet so was quite hungry..

just when thought things were going on well, it took a turn for the worst.. didn't go to school today, woke up with a fever.. haven't been feeling well since Sun, coupled with my hetic schedule wasn't suprising I got ill.. went to see the doctor just now, feeling much better now after taking the medicine.. just wanna update my blog since I'm stuck at home..

Friday had band orientation for the new J1s who came to join us.. had the 100-400 that I rented with me, so practiced some shots before Sports Carnival on Sat.. Zhi Kai used the lens first to shoot the soccer match we had against Mediacorp.. Gurmit Singh was there I heard, the actor not our PE teacher of the same name.. hahaa..
well, the 100-400 is quite big and heavy.. but the quality it delivers it just superb, have to get used to the push-pull mechanism for zooming though.. anyway, here are some pics..

more can be found here..

Saturday had our Sports Carnival at Bedok Reservoir.. met up with one of the J1s, Yia Chin assigned for the Sports Carnival.. pretty much attached to me for this event.. well, she had some experience in her sec sch in photo and AVA, so didn't have to teach her on the basics and all that.. introduced more advance techniques/concepts such as AI Focusing, Panning, DoF.. here are some shots..

0622 in action...
lent Yia Chin try the 100-400 for awhile.. we were shooting at the launching point, when Mr Bernard Lee came up and gave his trademark inquistive look at her.. I must admit, it did look odd, a small sized gal with a large white lens.. didn't know Mr Lee was into photography also.. actually, these pics can be found on the college website also..

here's my fav pic I took that morning..

then had to rush off to collect some pics for the RJC photo competition.. Kok Wey was kind enough to help me carry one of the bags back first, my shoulders were aching after a whole morning of shooting.. took 69 to Bedok MRT then to Chinatown.. realised I was short on cash, wanted to print some photos I missed but didn't have enough cash.. was quite hungry by then, had a doublecheese burger from mac to cease the rumbling.. got back on time for band pract in the afternoon.. wanted to go for cj's con fuco v, but didn't have $ with me.. then had a com meeting to discuss the plans for muse festival..

recieved this in my e-mail when I got home..

We shall keep you informed of further news towards the time of the Book Launch and Public Exhibition in August 2007 at the National Library.

well, its my first photography related accomplishment, looking forward to it.. but I wonder which pic of the 3 was selected.. prob the one with my cousin and grandfather.. my other 2 were also quite good, but abit too generic.. this one was special..

Sunday, 1st April and you know what day it is.. the irony is that I set myself up for an unintended April Fool's joke.. overslept that morning, was suppose to meet up to return back the lens at 11.45, and I only woke up at 11.30.. Jason was kind enough to change to meet up at 12.45.. reached there on time, then wasted 40cents passing the MRT gates when i remembered I had to print the photos that I missed.. took 66, then walked to Burlington Square.. the uncle remembered me from last time.. had lunch first, then spent the rest of the hour walking around at SLS.. then took 23 to get to 147's bus stop and 105 to outside Zhi Kai's place.. went to his house to sort out the photos and entry forms.. had abit of running nose the whole day..
we had a litte trek round the perimeter of the school to get to 156 bus stop.. the grass outside the sch was quite thick.. was abit skeptical about the contradicting deadlines for the competition, Melissa said it was the 1st, didn't wanna risk it.. alighted at their backgate which was locked.. then walked along their perimeter to get to their front gate.. and walked we did, their campus was very big.. in the end found out it was closed, and we wasted our time for nothing.. sent them an e-mail regarding the dates and turns out its the 9th, and they changed it without making much notification..

Monday morning had a litte episode of "a series of unfortunate events", came down to wait for the bus at 8.30.. normally 109 comes by 8.40, a 10+ min ride leaving me with just enough time to reach by 9.. but 15mins later and the bus didn't come.. decided to take a cab since I would be late if I took 109 now, so let the bus go by.. walked back to before the turning to see if I could get a cab there, then there were a bunch of ppl waiting for cabs.. figured it was no point waiting at this point so got back to the bus stop.. and guess what, a 109 came and I missed it.. took my alt 72 + 156 route which was longer and not as convenient.. gave up all hope of coming on time, since it was already close to 9am when I boarded 72.. just goes to show how little tiny decisions can have so much impact..
reached only at 9.30, which by then was halfway through Physics lecture.. did some work by myself.. nv been so late before, feel so helpless just waiting at the bus stop.. while in sec sch, could just run to sch if I was running late.. well, only have myself to blame..

then had another long com meeting as with last week's, from 5.45 to 10.. seem like so long ago, but its only last week.. went through in detail the Muse festival, resolved some of the problems we faced.. discussed about the J1s situation, cos with not much time left for SYF, their our weakest link now.. could feel the committee is under lotsa stress now SYF is approaching fast.. and with the events lining up to SYF, its gonna test us to the limit..
